A big company is expected to take an impact of loss of $50-$70 million in its revenues in the current quarter due to the Maze ransomware attack. What is Maze Ransomware? Ransomware is a type of malicious software that blocks access to a computer system or data, usually by encrypting it, until the victim pays a fee to the attacker. If the victim doesn't pay in time, the data is gone forever. Maze Ransomware not only spreads across a network, infecting and encrypting every computer in its path, it also ex-filtrated the data to the attackers' servers where it is held for ransom. If a ransom isn't paid, the attackers publish the files online. The company has roped in the FBI to investigate the matter. There is no information on whether the impacted employees were only based in the US, or if employees from other geographies were impacted as well. “Maze ransomware operators are known to conduct their attack below the surface and have a reputation of stealing the data first before locking their target systems. They fully understand their victim's reputation risks, and hence their approach is "steal, lock and inform" Results from a survey in a report indicates that 85% of managed service providers report ransomware attacks as the most common malware threat to small to midsize businesses .
